Paul Jackson is the artist that influences my work most and in this post I will discuss five paradigms in which he operates.
Colour: Most of Jacksons illustrations are done using only black pen, This would ordinarily make an image look very one dimensional, however due to him using an array of nib sizes he is able to build up tone and some of the smaller marks look grey in comparison to the larger more stark black marks.
Pointillism: Instead of using lines to create tone and shape in his drawings Jackson uses dots. By using a multitude of pressures and pen sizes he is able to create a vast tonal range. This gives the drawing a seamless look despite being done in such a harsh medium.
Animals: The majority of Jackson’s drawings are of animal skulls being torn from their bodies. This is a unique subject matter and sets him apart from other artists
Glitching: Another unique method of drawing that Jackson incorporates into his work is that he makes the images appear like they’re glitching, like a computer screen would glitch. Again, I’ve never seen this done before and it sets his work apart from any other.
